dc.description.abstract Hikikomori is a phenomenon in Japan that occurs when someone withdraws from their social environment for some reason. The term hikikomori was coined by a Japanese psychologist, Dr. Tomaki Saito. According to Dr. Tomaki, a hikikomori sufferer usually does not engage in social relations for a period of at least 6 months to years. Hikikomori is mostly experienced by young people aged 14 to 30 years. A person becomes a hikikomori perpetrator because of several events that happen to him. These incidents most often come from the environment around a hikikomori perpetrator, such as the home environment, school, and social environment.
