dc.description.abstract This design also has a special purpose of applying new things that are not common, in this case design activities can be a form of finding mechanisms and working systems that can be applied in the future. The concept of mechanical wind turbine design is to produce a tool that can convert wind energy into electric energy, so that it can be used for power generation applications on highways. The test time of 6 minutes with the type of passing vehicle (Bus, truck, private car, container, motorcycle) rpm produced is 84.6 RPM. These results are the highest RPM value during the measurement process produced by wind turbines. Research objectives Designing Savonius-type vertical wind turbines on permanent speed generators. Calculates the spin speed of the shaft, the type of vehicle passing and the duration of the axle lap specified. Special purpose, Create a savonius type vertical shaft wind turbine design. The resulting electricity is used to illuminate traffic on the highway, generating power of 12 to 14 Volts. Wind is air that moves due to the rotation of the earth and the difference in air pressure around it. The wind moves from a place of high air pressure to low air pressure. The wind occurs when the air is heated and becomes lighter, so this can cause the air pressure to decrease and the light air to rise. The time required in the process of designing the creation of vertical wind turbines takes ± 3 months. The implementation of vertical wind turbine design for application power generation on the highway, carried out in the Engine Production Process Laboratory of Universitas Harapan Medan and the implementation of vertical wind turbine testing carried out on the highway across Sumatra Medan. Design a savonius type vertical wind turbine using an iron plate with a thickness of 1 mm and use 4 blades with a length of 123 cm, blade width of 38 cm. Using U.S. iron diameter 2 cm with a length of 200 cm and iron pipe measuring diameter 34 mm, pipe thickness 2 mm and length 150 cm. Use a direct current XD-3420 type generator (DC). The most high rpm produced is 84.6 RPM, with the type of vehicles passing through are Buses, Trucks, Private Cars, Containers, and Motorcycles. The test time is 6 minutes.
