Soils with poor characteristics often cause problems such as soft soils with low bearing capacity. A soil improvement method is needed that can overcome these problems. Bukho rock ash and volcanic ash have the potential to be used as alternative repair materials, but they need to be tested with two-stage stabilization to get maximum results and their potential to improve the compressive strength of free soft soils.
The soil used in this study is soft clay based on the criteria for the value of free compressive strength. The variation of the mixture of stabilizing agents added to bukho rock ash was 3%, 6%, 9%, 12% and volcanic ash 4% of the dry weight of the soil. In addition to physical properties tests, standard compaction and unconfined compressive strength tests were carried out to determine the increase in compressive strength values in soil stabilized with bukho rock ash and volcanic ash.
The original soil studied has a compressive strength value qu of 1.53 kg/cm², the original soil can be classified as rigid clay consistency, with the addition of bukho stone ash in one step, the maximum results are obtained in a variation of 6% with a compressive strength value of 1.44 kg. /cm² for volcanic ash the highest compressive strength value was found in the 12% variation of 1.67 kg/cm², while the two-stage stabilization experienced an increase in the compressive strength value of 2.24 kg/cm². And the consistency of the clay soil was very stiff, The results of this study indicate that stabilization in two stages is much better than one stage in improving the physical properties of the soil and the compressive strength of clay.
