Asukadera (Gangoji Temple) is the oldest large-scale temple in Japan, consisting of a five-storied pagoda (tō), a main hall (kondō) surrounded by a covered corridor (kairo), an assembly hall (kōdō), and several ancillary buildings. And the gate (mon) which is the entrance to the Asukadera complex. This temple was built by bringing in workers from Paekche, and the construction process took quite a long time. Because to build a large-scale temple, it takes a lot of manpower. Before they carry out construction on buildings, they must first prepare materials for construction, such as wood, stone, clay, and others. They built the first pagoda, then followed by kondō and other buildings. Each building in Asukadera has its own function. Like a kondō which serves as a place to store paintings or Buddha statues, it is also used to store sacred objects. Pagoda which serves as a place for Buddhist relics. Assembly hall (kōdō) which serves as a meeting place or place of study. The purpose of this writing in general aims to find out the history and background of the construction of Asukadera, and to know the function and meaning of each building in Asukadera. This paper uses the library method, and the results of research on similar topics.
