dc.description.abstract | Ulos is a result of Batak women weaving. Ulos is used in any traditional ceremony at Batak Toba community in particular. This research is aimed to find the object-based scheme of trichotomy of Ulos Bintang Maratur and Ulos Ragi Hotang and how both Ulos exposed through situational context in Batak Toba ethnic. The writer focused on two kinds of Ulos in Batak Toba ethnic, they are Ulos Bintang Maratur and Ulos Ragi Hotang as the main object. In analyzing the data, the writer used Pierce theory as semiotic approach. The data were taken from books, journals, cultural websites, and interviews with a customary head. This research used qualitative research methodology in analyzing the data. The writer has found the result that both Ulos have their function based on their context which are Ulos Bintang Maratur is given to children who enter a new home or having a new home. In particular, this Ulos was given to a 7-month pregnancy rescue event given by the hulaula to the child and Ulos Ragi Hotang is given to a bride who is carrying out a traditional wedding ceremony. Totally, there are five kinds of different ornaments and two kinds of addition ornaments found on the both Ulos. The five kinds of different ornaments are fence, birds, stars, rattan and bamboo shoot. The two addition ornaments are long stripes and flourishes like “Horas” word. The ornaments and motifs of these Ulos have each meaning and contextual meaning based on each function and purpose on Batak Toba culture and stereotype. The main colours in Ulos are red, black and white. Each colours symbolize different context; Red symbolizes strong and power, black symbolizes wisdom and dignity, and white synbolizes purify and holyness. | en_US |
