dc.description.abstract This study concerns with the descriptive analysis of traditional costume in Nias Selatan. The problem of the study focus on, 1. What are the denotative and connotative meanings used in traditional costume in Nias Selatan? 2. How are the denotative and connotative manings applied in traditional costume in Nias Selatan?. The objectives of the study are to find the denotative and connotative meanings in traditional costume in Nias Selatan and to find the denotative and connotative meanings expressed in traditional costume in Nias Selatan. This study used a Barthers’ theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method to analyze traditional costumes. The data sources in this study is basically divided into two; primary and secondary data. Primary data in this study is traditional costume in Nias Selatan. Meanwhile the secondary data takes from some books related to my research. Based on the Barthes’ theory, the result of this study conclude that in denotation the meaning of yellow is the basic color similar in pure gold, meanwhile in connotation the meaning of yellow is nobleness, divinity, glory and prosperity. In denotation the meaning of white is the basic color similar in cotton, meanwhile in connotation the meaning of white is purity, light, and safe, holy. In denotation the meaning of red is the basic color similar in blood, meanwhile in connotation the meaning of red is courage, blood, or the totality of a soldier. In denotation the meaning of black is the basic color similar in color charcoal, meanwhile in connotation the meaning of black is sadness, demage, night, darkness, mystery, death, destruction, elegant. en_US
