Metal welding is a welding process performed on two different types or alloys of metals. Stainless steel is steel that is designed with qualities capable of working in a higher temperature range, so that it can be used in the construction of storage tanks, pipes and valves. When combining two different metals, problems that often arise in welding include differences in melting points, expansion coefficients, physical and mechanical properties. Therefore, the selection of the right welding electrode will produce a good connection. This study aims to determine the effect of the type of electrode on stainless steel 201 and stainless steel 304 on their tensile strength and hardness. The electrodes used in this study were types E 7016 and E 308. The welding method used SMAW welding with a 60° seam. Mechanical strength was tested using a tensile testing machine and a hardness test. Based on the tensile test, there is a significant difference. When welding specimens of different types between SS 201 and SS 304 using the E 7016 electrode, the average mechanical stress strength was 506.63 N/mm², and E 308 was 546.79 N/mm². And the average strain value on the E 7016 electrode is 8.17% while on the E 308 electrode it is 22.53%. And the average value of hardness on the E 7016 electrode is 422.5 kgf/mm² while on the E 308 electrode it is 238.3 kgf/mm². Meanwhile for welding on the same material types SS 201 and SS 304 the average value of mechanical stress on the E 7016 electrode is 496.42 N/mm² and the E 308 electrode is 487.97 N/mm², the average strain value on the E 7016 electrode is 3.27% and on the E 308 electrode is 7.59%. And the average hardness value for the E 7016 electrode is 491.7 kgf/mm², while for the E 308 electrode it is 382.1 kgf/mm². So it can be concluded that the type of electrode and differences in the material being welded affect the tensile strength and hardness in welding stainless steel 201 and stainless steel 304.
