Arduino is the development of a single chip microcontroller so that it already has input-output and program download devices. The advantage of the Arduino module is that it has been equipped with several input- output media and a program downloader tool so that it is very practical in making programs and downloading them to the system. Based on these advantages, on this occasion the author tries to apply an Arduino microcontroller in the real world, namely to develop a digital compass system. It is said to be a digital compass because the compass to be made does not use mechanical components such as needles and so on. A compass made using a chip that is sensitive to magnets. The HMC 5883 chip is a component that can detect magnetic fields. the tool has been successfully made and works according to its purpose, namely detecting the cardinal points and providing information via an LCD display. The sensor provides data in the form of angle degrees starting from 0 degrees namely North, 90 degrees is East, 180 degrees is south and 270 degrees is for West, while for northeast or other is the middle value of the angle for example northeast is at an angle of 45 degrees. The accuracy of the wind direction is more accurate by using a digital sensor compared to the needle mode compass which is strongly influenced by the local magnet around it. The HMC 5883 sensor is read by the Arduino controller via i2c communication and converted to 8 cardinal directions then displays it on the LCD display in parallel. Overall this process managed to work well.
