dc.description.abstract This research aims to evaluate the potential use of lava stone as a filler material in asphalt mixtures. The eruption of Mount Sinabung in Tanah Karo, North Sumatra, in 2021 resulted in volcanic material such as lava stone. This study utilizes lava stone as an alternative filler material in asphalt mixtures. The research focuses on the ability of lava stone as a filler to enhance asphalt mixture characteristics and the influence of varying filler percentages on Marshall characteristics. The study conducted a series of tests on asphalt mixtures with varying percentages of lava stone filler (0%, 20%, 40%, 80%, and 100%) with asphalt binder contents of 5% and 6% to assess Marshall characteristics. The test results indicate that the use of lava stone as a filler meets the requirements for Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC) mixtures. The research also shows that the percentage of lava stone filler and asphalt content significantly affect Marshall characteristic values such as Stability, Marshall Quotient (MQ), Void in the Mix (VIM), Void in the Mineral Aggregate (VMA), Bulk Density, and Void Filled with Asphalt (VFA). Stability and Marshall Quotient values increase with higher percentages of lava stone filler, while values for Void in the Mix, Void in the Mineral Aggregate, Bulk Density, and Void Filled with Asphalt show some fluctuations. Nevertheless, the use of lava stone filler has a positive impact on asphalt mixture characteristics. Additionally, there is a decrease in Flow values at 5% asphalt content with increasing lava stone filler percentage, whereas there is an increase in Flow values at 6% asphalt content with increasing lava stone filler percentage.
