dc.description.abstract Speech acts are utterances made as part of social interaction in which there are actions. By saying something, speakers also do something. Speech events are social events because they involve parties who speak in a particular situation and place. In Japan there are several expressions that are often used in everyday life. The expression is 挨拶 (aisatsu).挨拶 (aisatsu) in Japanese means “greeting” in Indonesian. One of them is the expression of the word すみません (sumimasen). Sumimasen is also used in several speech act situations other than apologizing (shazai), such as thanking (kansya), asking for help (irai), and greeting or attracting the attention of the speech partner (yobikake). First, when used as an expression of apology, sumimasen is equivalent to the meaning of "sorry", second when it is used as an expression of thanks, sumimasen is equivalent to the meaning of "thank you", third when it is used as an expression to ask for help, sumimasen is equivalent to the meaning "could you help me", and fourth when it is used as an expression calling or attracting the attention of the speech partner, sumimasen has the same meaning.
